Summer is in full swing, and the garden is loaded with delights. I’m rejoining Six on Saturday, posting with other gardeners worldwide today to share the joy.

ONE. Peonies have been blooming for well over a month, and the last of the late bloomers are just fading now. It was the best peony year yet at Coppertop. Too many varieties to list…

TWO. Red currants are very late to ripen this year. I love the way they glow in the summer sun. I haven’t decided if I will make jelly again this year or allow the birds to have them all.

THREE. Roses, roses, roses! The rose garden is my favorite place to be right now. Trios of Munstead Wood, Golden Celebration, Lady Emma Hamilton, Princess Anne, and Gertrude Jekyll are heavy laden, even after dying back to the ground in our crazy low January 2024 temperatures. Other standouts are Jude the Obscure and Lady of Shalott.

FOUR. The newest hens are healthy, gorgeous, and producing well. We’re thrilled to share dozens of eggs with friends and family. It’s amazing to notice the variety in recent eggs, from super small to huge eggs with double yolks. We currently have 14 hens.

FIVE. Besides eggs, friends are finding Coppertop cabbages on their doorsteps! The veggie garden is thriving.

SIX. The first blooming dahlias of 2024 are ones I started from seed during the winter months. These first year unnamed plants are great fun and full of surprises. Many more to come this summer and fall!

  1. Very nice choice this week! This peony.. wow
I’m impressed to see so many beautiful flowers because you must be having a heat wave right now in the US, right? Good luck if that’s the case.

    1. Hi Fred! Thanks for the kind words. We did have a heatwave early in the week, but for us it only reached 82F / 28C due to our somewhat marine climate. Where we live is known as one of the most consistently cool places — but not too cold 🙂 — in the U.S. We absolutely love it, and most blooms do, too!

      1. 82F is quite reasonable and pleasant in summer, …if it’s not too humid . May your flowers benefit from these beautiful temperatures. A great summer to you! Bye.

  2. What beautiful peonies, sadly, mine were a failure this year – with only two producing a few photo-worthy blooms. Others didn’t flower at all. The rose garden is looking wonderful – you have a great selection of beauties and the dahlias are going to provide you with more spectacular colour very soon!

Is peony envy a thing? These blooms are lovely! Thanks for good photos of them.

  6. Peonies are SO enviable. They do not get sufficient chill here to perform reliably, although I have seen a few perform unexplainably well.

  8. Our peonies are long gone so it was nice to see your beauties. Your raised bed garden area is good looking! My dahlias are up but not blooming yet, and fresh eggs are the best. Looks like you are having a great July.
