The LAST Last Dahlias

Well, a couple weeks ago I wrote what I imagined would be the final farewell to the dahlias. Because our first frost is later than expected, that post made a liar out of me. The blooms are getting smaller and the plants are leggy, but I won’t do any cutting back or digging of tubers until the stems brown. A lecture I attended by Clallam County Master Gardeners has convinced me that I need to dig and store all my dahlias for winter due to our altitude and the fact the older ones haven’t been divided for at least a couple of years. At the lecture I met some amazing dahlia growers, one of whom invited me to come take tubers I’d like from his garden nearby! Gardeners are wonderful people.
